The Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board was established in 2011 after they identified the need for generalist OHS professionals to be professionally certified.
They believe that OHS professional education should be based on strong scientific and technical concepts, evidenced-informed, delivered by suitably competent persons and so recognised by the profession, government, industry and the community. They review university-level OHS professional education programs and gives recognition for those programs that meet their criteria.
The Board also engages with government agencies involved in OHS policy and regulation, the Higher Education sector, and supports recognition awards as an important part of promoting OHS education.
The Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board has placed the NEBOSH International Diploma as equivalent or slightly above the Australian Advanced Diploma in OHS/WHS. It also meets the requirements for certification as an OHS Practitioner.
If you have your Chartered Membership of IOSH, you’ll also be eligible to take the Alternative Knowledge Assessment and the Australian OHS law exam, which would enable you to apply for certification as an OHS Professional.
The Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals is a membership association for the health and safety profession in Canada. They certify qualified safety practitioners as Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP) ®.
The CRSP® certification is a widely accepted form of recognition by industry and government in Canada. Many employers require the CRSP® certification in order to qualify for a safety position.
In 2018, a new Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) was introduced to support the constant evolvement of the industry. A CRST is someone who has met the requirements for registration set out by the BCRSP Governing Board. They’re known for supporting a safe working environment by maintaining OHS administrative processes, conducting training, and using state-of-the-art processes and common practice solutions to reduce OHS risks. They oversee and drive monitoring and compliance in relation to technical and behavioral risk controls. To become CRST certified, you must meet the qualification standards, including education and experience, and pass the CRST examination.
Holders of the NEBOSH International Diploma are eligible for certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST). For those with greater workplace experience and additional qualifications, BCRSP also offers a streamlined route to Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) certification for people with a NEBOSH International Diploma.
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) sets and certifies technical competency criteria for safety, health and environmental practitioners worldwide in the United States. They set standards, evaluate academic and professional qualifications and certify practitioners in the safety profession.
The value of a safety certification continues to grow. In the U.S., numerous laws, regulations and standards cite it. More importantly, many companies include it in position standards, government agencies rely on it, and contracts for safety services require it.
A Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a safety professional who has met education and experience standards and demonstrated the knowledge that applies to health and safety professional practice. They’re known for performing least 50% of professional level safety duties, including making worksite assessments to determine risks, assessing potential hazards and controls, evaluating risks and hazard control measures, investigating incidents, maintaining and evaluating incident and loss records, and preparing emergency response plans.
