What is the NEBOSH International Diploma?

The NEBOSH International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals is a professional health and safety qualification. It’s designed to teach you everything you need to know about how to be an active, competent health and safety practitioner helping you to develop strategy, raise standards and improve efficiency in your company.  

You’ll develop a specialist set of skills which employers, governments and professional organisations all over the world are calling out for. The prestigious qualification is seen as the benchmark for health and safety professionals, and will demonstrate to employers your ability to make significant, strategic improvements.

What level is the NEBOSH International Diploma?

The NEBOSH International Diploma is level 6 qualification, comparable to a degree with honors, so it’s certainly not an easy course. You’ll need to have a foundation level knowledge of health and safety before you start, either from a level 3 qualification such as the NEBOSH International Certificate, or from at least 5 years work experience in the field.

Depending on your chosen learning method, it can take anywhere between 18 months – 3 years to complete the NEBOSH International Diploma. As with any academic qualification, you’ll need to dedicate a significant amount of time to your own research and self-study, as well as completing the recommended taught hours.

What does the NEBOSH International Diploma cover?

What does the NEBOSH International Diploma cover?The NEBOSH International Diploma is modelled on the UK’s most popular qualification for health and safety professionals, the NEBOSH National Diploma.

The key difference between the International and National version is the application of legal requirements. Rather than being guided by a UK framework, the NEBOSH International Diploma takes a risk management approach based on best practice and international standards, such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) codes of practice.

Local laws and cultural factors are also included when appropriate. It’s this best practice approach which makes it so appealing to global employers and helps make sure people all around the world at working to the same high standards.

The course has 3 taught units, ID1, ID2 and ID3.

How is the NEBOSH International Diploma assessed?

The 2019 Diploma syllabus change means the NEBOSH Diploma qualification has also adopted new pro-active assessments designed to put the impetus in the hands of learners during this critical step in their career. 

Instead of four assessments, there are only three in the updated course:

1. UNIT ID1: 6 weeks (30 working days) Workplace health and safety principles

2. UNIT ID2: 4 weeks (20 working days) Controlling workplace health issues

3. UNIT ID3: 4 weeks (20 working days) Controlling workplace safety issues

ID2 and ID3 are brand new practical workplace-based assessments. Designed to simulate leaders’ decision-making process and get the very best out of all learners.

The NEBOSH Diploma takes a hands-on approach to learning. Unit ID1 is assessed with a practical assignment made up of scenario-based questions, workplace activities, reflective tasks, and a short research project. Units ID2 and ID3 are assessed with a case study and scenario-based questions.

All assessments can be completed remotely, meaning you do not need to attend an invigilated examination venue.

Where is the NEBOSH International Diploma recognised?

Due to its global best practice approach, the NEBOSH International Diploma is recognised by employers in all industries, all around the world. It meets the academic requirements to become a certified health and safety professional by boards such as Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board, BCRSP, BCSP, and SAIOSH.
