The IGC syllabus takes a risk management approach based on best practice and international standards, such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) codes of practice. Local laws and cultural factors are also covered where relevant.
No previous health and safety knowledge is needed, but learners should have a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0.

Learners must pass 2 x written examinations for IGC1 and GC2. Exams are taken in training centres under exam conditions. GC3 is a work-based project which must be completed within 2 weeks of the written exams.
