How Long Does it Take to Complete an IEMA Environmental Management Course?

The duration of an IEMA course varies depending on the level of qualification and learning method.

You can complete an introductory awareness-level course online within just 7 hours. The IEMA Foundation Certificate requires around 40 hours online study or 5 days of taught learning, while the advanced IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management requires around 120 hours of self-study, or 15 days of tutor-led training.

IEMA Course Entry Requirements

One of the most appealing factors of IEMA is its wide range of qualifications. There are courses available for beginners right through to advanced-level practitioners.

Entry-level qualifications don't require any previous knowledge or experience. They'll give you a solid introduction to the subject and teach you everything you need to know to kick-start a career in environmental management.

The higher-level IEMA Certificate is for those already working in an environmental role. It requires understanding fundamental sustainability issues and trends gained through work experience or the IEMA Foundation Certificate.

We recommended you have an excellent English level to take any IEMA course. That way, you'll be able to understand and communicate technical, environmental concepts confidently.

IEMA Environmental Management Course Exams

All IEMA qualifications have an end of course assessment to test your understanding. The good news is that almost all exams are taken online or through written assignment - that means no stressful exam conditions!

The IEMA Foundation Certificate has a 1-hour, open-book online exam at the end of the course, with multiple choice questions. The IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management has three separate assessments, one at the end of each module. You will also need to complete a final Assessment of Competence to qualify for your Practitioner level membership of IEMA.

The exams are meant to challenge your thinking and put your new skills to the test. You'll still need to put in adequate revision to feel confident when sitting your exam.

Do IEMA Environmental Management Qualifications Expire?

The simple answer is, no! Once you've achieved an IEMA qualification, it's yours to keep forever. However, the environmental sustainability industry is evolving at a rapid pace. Regulators are introducing new legislation and best practices guidelines every few years, so it's crucial you keep up to date with the changing landscape or risk falling behind.
