How is the NEBOSH Certificate assessed?

The NEBOSH General Certificate is assessed in a two-step process:

  • IG1: An online open book exam (OBE) and supporting closing interview
  • IG2: A workplace-based practical risk assessment

You need to pass both assessments to achieve your qualification.

The open book exam replaces the 2-hour written exam for Unit IG1 of the NEBOSH General Certificate.  You can now sit both of your NEBOSH exams in your own home or another safe and suitable location.

Should I go straight for the NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma, or start with the NEBOSH General Certificate?

The NEBOSH General Certificate teaches the fundamentals of health and safety management. It offers great insight to anyone new to health and safety. The NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma builds on the knowledge you gain from the NEBOSH Certificate at a higher academic level. It discusses topics in a lot more detail so is better suited to those with experience. We always reccommend you take the NEBOSH General Certificate before taking the NEBOSH Diploma.

How is the NEBOSH IGC assessed?

NEBOSH has introduced open book exams for both the NEBOSH National and International General Certificates – units NG1, IG1, NGC1 and IGC1. This replaces in-person closed book exams and enables learners to sit their NEBOSH assessment in their own home or another safe and suitable location.

Assessment is a two-step process.

  • An online open-book assessment
  • A 3-hour practical risk assessment to demonstrate the knowledge

You need to pass both assessments to achieve your NEBOSH International General Certificate.
