Dr Bill Gunnyeon CBE appointed IOSH Chair of Board of Trustees

Dr GunnyeonFormer Chief Medical Advisor, Dr Bill Gunnyeon CBE, has been appointed the new Chair of Board of Trustees for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) following a meeting of the Chartered body’s governing council. 

An influential figure in Occupational Health and Safety 

Dr Bill Gunnyeon has led the health and work agenda within government for nearly a decade, acting as appointed Chief Medical Advisor, Director for Health and Wellbeing and Chief Scientist at the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions. 

During his career, Dr Gunnyeon has developed a deep understanding of health and safety regulation from six years as director level sponsor of the Health and Safety Executive. He oversaw the Government response to the Löfstedt review of health and safety legislation and played a key role in the development of the Office for Nuclear Regulation. He also commissioned the two key scientific evidence reviews in health and work and vocational rehabilitation, implemented the government response to Dame Carol Black’s Review of the health of working age people, introduced the new fit note, oversaw the government response to the Independent Review of Sickness Absence and led the development of the new Fit for Work Service.

Dr Gunnyeon is a Past-President of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine of which he is a Fellow, as well as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He was awarded a CBE in 2009.

Of his new role, Dr Gunnyeon commented:

“The health and wellbeing of working age people has never been more important to economic success than it is today and health and safety professionals have a key role to play in protecting and promoting the health and wellbeing of all those at work. For those professionals the quality of education, training, on-going professional development and support available to them is critical to fulfilling their roles and IOSH provides the robust framework on which this all depends.

I feel hugely privileged therefore to be asked to lead the Trustee Board at this exciting time for the organisation as it looks to the future and prepares to set its strategic direction for the next five years.

Dr Bill Gunnyeon’s new role will see him be instrumental in shaping the future of the safety and health profession, working with IOSH members to deliver a new strategy for the leading professional body.
