What is the NEBOSH International Diploma?

NEBOSH certified logo - largeThe NEBOSH International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Professionals (often called the NEBOSH Diploma) is a leading, advanced qualification for professionals. It replaced the NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety in April 2021.

Based on best practice, the NEBOSH International Diploma provides a body of knowledge that helps improve workplace health and safety and advance the profession on a global scale.

NEBOSH International Diploma entry requirements

You should already have a fundamental understanding of health and safety issues, such as risk management, hazard control, accident investigation, and international regulation.

We always recommend taking a foundation-level qualification like the NEBOSH General Certificate or having at least 5 years’ work experience before taking the course.

If you're a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety professionals (BCRSP) then you'll already meet the course entry requirements. 

What's covered in the NEBOSH International Diploma?

The NEBOSH International Diploma teaches health and safety management at senior-level. It's based on best practice and international regulation, such as the International Labour Organisations (ILO) codes of practice.

The course has three units:

  • Unit ID1: Workplace Health and Safety Principles
  • Unit ID2: Controlling Workplace Health Issues
  • Unit ID3: Controlling Workplace Safety Issues

NEBOSH International Diploma Learning Outcomes

The NEBOSH International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Professionals focuses on the role of the modern day professional By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  • Understand the role of health and safety legislation, including the United Nations’ (UN) International Labour Organization (ILO) and other non-governmental bodies.
  • Use different types of health and safety leadership approaches to influence others.
  • Proactively manage health and safety, taking account of human failures and factors.
  • Manage health and safety competence (both your own and that of the organisation).
  • Use a range of hazard identification, risk management and loss causation techniques.
  • Monitor health and safety performance.
  • Develop your role as a health and safety professional, including how it links with Corporate Social Responsibility.
  • Effectively manage organisational change.
  • Manage contractors and supply chains.
  • Control a range of workplace health, wellbeing, and safety issues.

How is the NEBOSH International Diploma assessed?

The NEBOSH Diploma takes a practical approach to learning and is assessed entirely through practical work and scenario based questions.

ID1 is assessed with a practical assignment split into 4 sections:

  • Scenario based questions
  • Work based activities
  • Reflective statements
  • A short research project

Units ID2 and ID3 are assessed with case studies and scenario based questions.

You will have 4-6 weeks to complete your assessments and submit your work to the NEBOSH online portal. You should spend around 60 hours on your ID1 assignment and 40 hours on your ID2 and ID3 assignments.

Is the NEBOSH Diploma recognised in Saudi Arabia?

Yes! The NEBOSH Diploma is recognised as the mark of a health and safety professional all around the world. It helps to develop the skills and knowledge of health and safety professionals using global best practice, such as the ILO codes of practice, UK legislation, and OHSAS1800/ISO45001 management systems. 

It's accepted by professional membership organisations like IOSH, BCRSP, BCSP and SAIOSH. 

What's the difference between the NEBOSH International Diploma and NEBOSH National Diploma?

Both versions of the NEBOSH Diploma offer an advanced look into health and safety management. They follow the same syllabus and have the same exams. 

The main difference between the two courses is the regulation and legislation. The NEBOSH National Diploma is based on UK legislation, so it's great for anyone working inside the UK. 

The NEBOSH International Diploma takes a risk management approach based on best practice and ILO codes of practice. Local laws and cultural factors are also included. It's perfect for anyone working outside the UK, or in a multinational organisation.

Does the NEBOSH Diploma expire?

No! Once you've achieved your NEBOSH Diploma you won't need to retake any units or refresher courses again. But it's always good to keep up to date with the latest legislation and health and safety news. You can do this by reviewing the latest syllabus, subscribing to health and safety blogs and attending health and safety events. 

Is the NEBOSH Diploma a degree?

The NEBOSH Diploma is a level 6 professional academic qualification. Because it's not awarded by a university or college, it's not classed as a degree. However it's recognised by people in the industry as the same level as a Bachelor degree. 

How hard is the NEBOSH Diploma?

The NEBOSH Diploma is an advanced qualification, so it’s certainly not easy. Your current level of knowledge and ability to motivate yourself will naturally play a big part on how difficult you find the course.
