Andrew is a Health and Safety Consultant with 23 years experience in the production, processing and training environments. Areas of expertise include production and machinery safety, mobile plant, maintenance, management systems and auditing.

Andrew teaches IOSH courses (including Safety for Executives and Directors), NEBOSH Certificate courses and NEBOSH Diploma courses, as well as undertakes consultancy work including health and safety policy reviews, risk assessment guidance, auditing and designing and delivering bespoke training solutions.

Professional Background

Andrew is an apprentice trained and degree qualified Engineer, with early roles as a Management Trainee and Project Engineer in a large PLC steel manufacturer in South Wales. He moved to the position of Mechanical Engineer in the metal recycling division of the PLC steel company, and was charged with the task of completing maintenance risk assessments and implementing safe systems of work.

He then took on the role of Risk Manager, with the mandate of taking the metal recycling sites through the process of improving health and safety standards and performance, concentrating on the completion of risk assessments and safe systems of work for production and maintenance tasks and implementing physical improvement on site. This included raising the standards of guarding on machinery, improving welfare arrangements and introducing medicals and health surveillance, as well as setting up site safety meetings to drive through health and safety improvements. He later led the development and implementation of a health and safety management system, writing and implementing a new health and safety policy and setting up a programme of sites inspections and system audits.

The acquisition of the company followed with a program of expansion which took the number of sites from seven to nineteen over a three year period. With this, Andrew was tasked with steering a rapid implementation of policies and procedures into some of the new sites and a blending of systems into the others. His role changed during this time to Health, Safety and Environment Manager.

Another acquisition meant a coming together of two businesses into one organisation comprising thirty seven operational sites and a head office. During this time, as part of a management reorganisation, Andrew’s role changed to Group Health, Safety & Environment Manager. The role eventually resulted in the heading up of a team of four Regional Health and Safety Advisors, an Environmental Advisor, three part-time Consultants and an Administrator.

Andrew’s enjoyment in developing and delivering training led to a change in career and a role as a Health and Safety Consultant in 2004. He started with the teaching of IOSH and NEBOSH certificate courses and quickly progressed to the NEBOSH Diploma.

His role progressed onto a position of Principal Consultant and then Training Manager with the responsibility for project managing the suites of training materials to budget and delivery deadlines, line-managing a team of health and safety trainers/consultants and undertaking training and consultancy projects.

Andrew is now a full-time Health and Safety Consultant at Astutis, teaching and delivering courses and consultancy work.
